South Africa Geographic Issues
Southern Africa has a very complex environment and faces many concerning issues because of this. Unlike the rest of the continent, the region includes almost every landform imaginable, including deserts, plateaus, mountains, marshes, many different kinds of forest, and more. This makes it very difficult for the native people to adapt to the changing environment. Southern Africa's main issues include health issues and poor living conditions mostly.
The people who live in southern Africa face one main problem around the entire region: the lack of farmable land. The vast deserts and plateaus in the region are not farmable at all, and the marshes and mountains make farming very limited. Crops tend to not grow well due to the climate, which changes from hot to mild consistently. Also, increased poverty has become a major issue of the region. This is partially caused by the lack of farmable land, but it is also caused by the lack of navigable rivers and water bodies. This makes it hard for crops and other food supplies to be transported across the region.
Also, the environment is relentless to the south African people. Droughts are very common in southern Africa, leading to more famine and loss of water. Because of the droughts and the desertification in the region, inhabitants have been forced to live in mostly dry areas. This makes for unpleasant living conditions. Lastly, southern Africa varies in elevation. This makes the people and their culture different throughout the region, causing many different cultures and beliefs to spring forth. Much violence occurs in the region because of this.
Southern Africa's complex and difficult environment forces inhabitants to live in some of the hardest living conditions on earth. Fortunately, through all of the struggles, many civilizations have discovered ways to make their lives easier in the region. Famine is still a major issue, but disease is starting to be more controlled. Geography, as it always has, plays a key role in the lives of southern Africans.
