Imperialism in West Africa
In West Africa, imperialism has played a negative effect on the countries of the region. Imperialism is when a country wants to expand to gain power through quantity of land mass. France was the country that took over West Africa. Before France arrived in West Africa, there were multiple large organized empires. Then when France left the region, they left it without any form of central government. This led to corrupt and abusive governments which followed no regulations.
The corruption in the government was usually a leader that became a dictator and stayed in power for their life time. The government leader usually spent a great deal of money on himself, so he made giant debts that his country had to pay off. This led to a point where nobody was making money. The leaders also made the countries break out into civil wars.
The government also did not treat their people correctly. In the early days of Imperialism there was the Atlantic slave trade which harm all the regions on the west coast of Africa. Now today, leaders still break many humanitarian laws when they are in power. They did nothing to help their people and they just created debt for them as their government term goes on. The government also killed anyone who opposed them to ensure they would never leave power. So when the people would riot, the government would use military force on them. These are just a few of the negative effects that imperialism brought the West African region.
